"Thomas Newton Clanton, G.L. Spain, and M.M. Jackson were responsible for the name Buckeye for this post office. Jackson built the Buckeye Canal, naming it for his home state, Ohio. In the midst of the agricultural land to be irrigated by the canal, Clanton gave a quarter section for a townsite. Jackson was a native of Sydney, Ohio and the new town was known as Sydney. By 1889 the townsite had been laid out. When the post office was established two years later, it was set up in Clanton's house with his daughter as postmistress. Curiously enough, although the town by 1895 was being referred to as Buckeye, deeds were made out under the name of Sydney until the town was incorporated c. 1931. It was then necessary to obtain a special order from the State Supreme Court officially to change the name from Sydney to Buckeye."
Post Office Established March 10,1888. Miss Cora J. Clanton Post Master
